But I was curious because I thought that some of these recent events might affect Christmas in some way shape or form - so I did a bit of research.
I'm sure we've all heard of a Christmas market, how these huge markets come to large cities to kick off the run up to Christmas. I've personally never been to one, but from what I hear, they are absolutely amazing. Apparently, according to some news articles, the number of these markets in England will be declining since Brexit. This is because the stallholders won't be getting such a good profit with the poor exchange rate, and some of them may not even be allowed in the country without a permit!
However having said that, the plans for this years Christmas markets are bigger and better than ever, with more stalls in many of the main locations such as Manchester, Shropshire and Birmingham. This could be a result of the fact that the Christmas markets had been planned for long before the referendum, and also because of the fact that we haven't actually left the EU yet, and won't for a little while. We might just have to wait this one out!
Another little factoid that I read is that the price of the ingredients used to make Christmas pudding have increased dramatically since Brexit caused the pound to dive bomb. Christmas dinners, you'll be pleased to hear however, haven't changed in price despite the increase in pork and vegetables. The key ingredients of Christmas pudding have increased by 21%, and although supplies in raisons were plentiful, the import prices have been much higher. Looks like we'll just have to go without... :(
According to an American news site, the people who supported Trump in the election will be spending a lot more this Christmas (a 6-7% increase). People who are upset with the outcome of the election will be spending less due to being unhappy with the direction that the country is moving in. Who knew an election could make people be less generous at Christmas!
I also read a very interesting article that compared Donald Trump to the Grinch, and to Orwell, believing that he is going to attempt to steal Christmas! By voting him president, the theft is complete apparently. I'm not entirely sure how they all link, but I'm scared!
I hope that you enjoyed this post today, its something very different to what I usually do. I don't really understand politics, but you had to have been living under a rock to miss this year, and who knew it could affect our Christmas pudding!?
See you tomorrow! (That is, if Christmas isn't stolen!)
