It's been a while since I've done one of these posts hasn't it? I thought that you were probably beginning to get sick of hearing a strangers opinions on random things, but then I decided that I didn't really care because I like to force my opinions of unwilling people regardless.
Enjoy!
For starters, lets just make it clear that I am speaking as a lonely singleton whose only ever received a Valentine's card from her mum. And even my mum has stopped sending them.
This may mean that my views are biased or sour or whatever, but I wouldn't say that I'm particularly bitter because I just find the whole thing rather ridiculous. First of all, one day a year to tell someone you love them? What about the other 364 days a year that you could tell them that? Love should be celebrated year round, not just on the one day that it is socially accepted.
Second of all, people really need to understand the difference between lust and love. St. Valentine was someone who went around marrying couples when they weren't allowed to be together because he believed that love should be free. He was executed for this. Is your Valentine worth that? Don't have one for the sake of having one, have a Valentine you love.
Third of all, the whole thing has just turned into a mega palaver with it being more about the brand of chocolate and the teddy bear than the person you're buying them for. Yeah, yeah, I know, it's the 'thought' that counts, but how much thought really goes into a Care Bear that says "I WUV U"? And a bottle of red wine and red roses? Really, you're going to be that cliché?
However, you could take this huge marketing scam and just make it into something that's funny. What I love doing on Valentine's Day is going into Tesco at around 6:00pm. Position yourself at the end of the Valentine's aisle and count how many men you see running through the doors, still in the business suits, grabbing a box of chocolates and the first card they see, and sprinting to the checkouts. These procrastinators really do make my Valentine's Day special. Make it a competition with your friends, who can spot the most in 10 minutes?
I guess Valentine's Day has just never really bothered me. It's probably easy to be this critical when your a teenager and have the allure of a peanut, and it's not like my best friend is getting engaged on a cruise tonight or something like that. I know that for some people this day is the very worst thing in the entire world, and I have no good advice for you, so I'll just say: don't let it bother you. I don't mean: try to not let it bother you, and I don't mean: go to a club and go home with the first person you meet, and I really don't mean: cry yourself asleep with a bottle of wine. No, I literally mean: don't let it bother you.
Go about you day as always, do your stuff, eat your food, as you would any old day (because it is any old day). In the evening, snuggle up on the sofa and watch a gory horror (no romance please), and do what you always do. If you're alone, so what? You were probably alone the previous night and that didn't bother you. You're probably going to be alone the next night and that doesn't bother you. (I'm getting a bit depressing now, many apologies). Why should tonight bother you?
And if you do feel yourself getting down in the dumps, think about all the wonderful people you do have in your life, all of your friends and family. Don't worry about the one person that's missing, they're clearly not very important.
I feel like I'm being really harsh today? I'm sorry if I am, I'm not normally, Valentine's Day just irritates me. Personally, I will be spending my evening catching up on some school work. Don't wait up.
See you soon!
P.S. If you do have someone to spend tonight with, please stop showing off about it. We're single enough without being reminded thank you very much.
