Movie Chats - Poldark

So it is set in the 18th century and is about a man called Ross Poldark. He has been away at war for three years and comes back to find his father dead, the girl he loved engaged to his cousin, and his estate in absolute ruins. He rescues a girl called Demelza and takes her on as a kitchen maid and tries to recover a failed mine. My mum describes him as a do-gooding bad boy, because although he does play with the grey areas in the law, its always to help those less fortunate.

Once again I am using the name 'movie' very loosely as I talk about a TV show. I might as well just rename this series something like General Media Discussions, but somehow that just doesn't have quite the same ring to it. Anyway, today I am going to talk to you about the BBC Drama Poldark.

My mum read all of the books when she was a teenager and was very excited when it came back on . We didn't however, have our acts together enough to be organised and watch it when it was on our screens, so my sister bought my mum series one for Christmas.

Normally I find these historical programmes really quite boring, I may just be the only British person in the world who doesn't like Downton Abbey - I know! I was a little dubious when the three of us sat down to watch the first episode as a part of a girly evening, not really expecting to enjoy it, but I ended up absolutely loving it!

I've actually only seen series one, but we're hoping to get series 2 soon, so please, no spoilers!

It may not sound very good, but it is extremely gripping and you will find yourself making some very strong attachments to the characters. I laughed and cried along with all of the characters, and I'm not ashamed to say that at least four times an episode, I was screaming at the TV. It is amazing if you just want to be transported to the clifftops of Cornwall (where it is somehow always sunny), and get completely absorbed in a truly amazing story. There are also about 4 trillion shots of Ross riding a galloping horse along the cliff edge as the sun sets, if that's what your into.

I did sometimes get a little confused because I'm not very good at picking up on subtleties and I occasionally found the language a little hard to understand, but if I managed to get through it, you can too. The story line really isn't that hard to follow, though it does move a long at a very brisk pace. Literally, about a year passes in every episode!

And the ending to series one, oh my goodness me, I'm still getting over it. I am really not the kind of person who cries at movies or TV ever, but I just couldn't stop bawling at this. It was so beautiful and dramatic and sad and heart-breaking and so many things put together. It is probably worth watching the whole series just for the final 5 minutes.

You have to be pretty alert to watch it, you cant just unwind to it because it is pretty heavy. However, it is amazing for a girls night (but its not chick-flickky) and really absorbing. I love it, and can't wait to get my hands on series two!

See you soon!
